ABC bookstore to close its doors

$1.1 Million deficit last year was the final nail in the coffin of Canada’s only national retail outlet for the Anglican Book Centre.

(Staff) The Anglican Book Centre will close its retail store in Toronto in July, 2007 and become solely an internet and telephone sales operation.  The Council of General Synod made the decision on Nov. 12.  Sales at ABC had dropped nearly $50,000 in the twelve months since Sept. 2005.  Three-quarters of the sales come from over the internet or telephone with only one-quarter generated from walk-in traffic.  A change of address a year ago may account for some of the lost sales.  The store sells not only books and cards but also music, vestments, icons and religious statuary.  Some of the 12-member store staff expressed concerns that removing the walk-in sales will only make the operation weaker.  It is not known how many of the employees will be retained in the new slimmed-down operation. The Anglican Church of Canada had a deficit of $1.1 million last year.
