(Staff) Two historic mission agencies have voted to become a single mission community. On Feb. 1^st the Church Mission Society and the South American Mission Society became a new joint entity known as CMS -- a mission service that will benefit from the rich history of both societies’ work in Europe, Africa, Asia and Latin America.

BC Diocese recommends closing 19 churches

CLOSING AND SELLING 19 churches on Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands is part of a strategy of “transforming and regenerating” the Diocese of British Columbia “in a post-Christian society.” Another five churches have been selected to be renamed and reconfigured as “hub” churches to welcome Anglicans from closed parishes.

Professors' Union Blacklists Christian University

The Canadian Association of University Teachers (CAUT) has accused Langley's Trinity Western University of falling below an accepted standard of academic freedom because it requires faculty to sign a statement of Christian faith as a condition of employment. The CAUT, a national umbrella group of faculty associations, has also placed the school on a list of “institutions found to have imposed a requirement of a commitment to a particular ideology or statement as a condition of employment.”

Hundreds of Christian organizations in Ontario are following a landmark case before the Ontario Superior Court of Justice, the outcome of which could affect the way they are permitted to express their Christian identity.

In December Christian Horizons, an evangelical Christian organization that runs group homes for disabled people in the Waterloo area, appeared before a three-judge panel to appeal the decision of a human rights tribunal.

Harvey appointed Dean of ACNA

Bishop Donald Harvey, moderator of the Anglican Network in Canada, has been appointed Dean of the Anglican Church in North America (ACNA) by Archbishop Robert Duncan. The appointment was unanimously ratified by the Executive Committee. As dean, Bishop Harvey will support the Primate by representing Archbishop Duncan at various events and meetings both within North America and internationally when the Primate is unable to attend.

Diocese and congregations file appeals

On Dec. 24^th, the trustees of four Anglican Network in Canada (ANiC) congregations in the greater Vancouver area filed an appeal of Mr. Justice Stephen Kelleher’s B.C. Supreme Court decision of last Nov. 25. They did so in an attempt to preserve their ministries on their current properties.

But the Diocese of New Westminster, which is part of the Anglican Church of Canada, is not entirely happy with the ruling either and on Jan. 7^th filed an appeal of the section awarding the $2.2 million bequest of Dr. Daphne Chun to St Matthias & St Luke’s.
