INTO THE WORD:

An Anglican
Covenant
Frustration
has been mounting in the Church of England. A group of evangelicals
representing 2000 parishes has signed a covenant outlining the
desire and rationale of the evangelical leaders. It was
released following their meeting with Abp Rowan Williams.

Michaelson: Missing the main event
Could it
be that the Church needs to recapture that sense of God’s Law and
Jesus’ radiant fulfillment of it as the Light that gives greater

The
starting point is Jesus. A church is nothing more nor less than the

The St. Michael Report draws the conclusion: that the
blessing of same-sex unions is not a communion-splitting issue.
So if this is not properly a communion-breaking issue, then why are
we seeing major fractures occurring throughout the church? Why
does it seem impossible for deeply differing theological convictions
to co-exist?

...Next
is the lifting from the table [of] the motion from the Synod of ’04
that effectively would give local option a possibility. Just how
that will be dealt with is an open question but it must be dealt
with because the motion was deferred from the previous Synod. I
suspect one option is once again to refer the matter because of the
conclusion [that] this is doctrine and therefore should be referred
back to a committee to look at the whole canon on marriage.

Ecclesiology: Ecclesiology is the doctrine of the Church
(from the Greek word “ecclesia,” meaning “assembly”). Some
Christians tend to have a utilitarian view of the Church as a purely
human institution, which may therefore be remodeled at will to suit
our good intentions, such as the promotion of the Gospel or the
service of those in need. Such views are not grounded in Scripture,
which always speaks of the Church as a theological reality,
created and governed by the Word of God. It is a human society, but
one redeemed by God; it is the Body and Bride of Christ (Ephesians
1.22-23; 5.25-28), the Temple of his indwelling Spirit (1 Cor.
3.16), a people, flock, or household of God living within the new
covenant (Exodus 6.7; Jeremiah 31.33; John 10.16, 1 Cor. 11:25; 11
Peter 5.2-4). Only as the Church abides by theological
reality can it serve God faithfully.

What does
Epiphany mean?
The word
“epiphany” means “showing,” “shining,” or “appearing,” and it refers
to the manifestation of Christ’s divine glory in the world –“the
glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and
truth” (John 1.14). There are multiple epiphanies of Christ,
multiple manifestations of his divine nature, wisdom and power, but
on the feast of Epiphany (January 6) the Church historically has
focused its attention on three events: the visit of the magi
(Matthew 2) in which the Jewish Christ was manifested to the
Gentiles as their Saviour; his baptism, when John saw the Spirit
descend upon him in the form of a dove and knew him to be the Son of
God (John 1.29-34); and the first miracle at Cana in which he
“manifested forth his glory; and his disciples believed on him”
(John 2.11). Christ’s divine glory is manifest, that we might
worship him in faith, in hope, and in love.

laboured for five years to produce this magnificent work with a
vision that the final volume would speak directly into the
