By GAVIN DUNBARWhat do Christians mean when they say that the Bible is “God’s word written”? This expression is used in Article XX of the Articles of Religion in the BCP. The reason Christians believe that the Bible is our primary “authority” in matters dealing with God and our salvation is because it is “God’s word written.” By this we mean: (1) The Bible is a supernatural revelation from God to humanity, and not simply a human creation which has God as its subject. (2) The Bible finds its meaning and unity in the person of the Word of God incarnate, Jesus Christ. (3) The Bible is a doctrinal means of salvation, which is to say that it reveals teaching which has our salvation as its purpose. And finally, (4) The Bible contains “all things necessary to salvation.” In other words, all that is required to be known and understood for the salvation of our souls is contained within the Bible. This is why Article VI can state so definitively that “whatsoever is not found [in the Bible], nor may be proved thereby, is not to be required of any man, that it should be believed as an article of the Faith, or be thought requisite or necessary to salvation.”
Bishop: from the Greek word episkopos translated variously bishop (KJV, NRSV, RSV) or overseer (NIV, ESV). Although this office was not appointed by Jesus, it was regularised in the Apostolic era. Paul intended for this office to continue and gave the requirements to Titus and Timothy. While many Reformation churches did away with this order (Presbyterian, Reformed, Mennonite), associating the order with the corruption in the church, the Church of England retained her bishops and commissioned them to “banish and drive away all erroneous and strange doctrine contrary to God’s Word.”

O ALMIGHTY God, who hast knit together thine elect in one communion and fellowship, in the mystical body of thy Son Christ our Lord: Grant us grace so to follow thy blessed Saints in all virtuous and godly living, that we may come to those unspeakable joys, which thou hast prepared for them that unfeignedly love thee; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
