For the first time ever, Canadian soldiers have been given complete Bibles, rather than New Testaments alone, and the impact of this has astounded even seasoned padres.

A forgotten theme of the Advent season

Our unity as Christians, at its most elemental level, is indeed already a spiritual reality, flowing as it does from the unity between the Father and the Son.

Author reveals C.S. Lewis' Narnia as a feast for the mind

Reviewed by

VALERIE MICHAELSON

John Bowen is one of those people who speaks and writes about Narnia as if he's actually been there.  It's no surprise, then, that his new book The Spirituality of Narnia: The Deeper Magic of C.S. Lewis draws us straight through the wardrobe and into magical terrain.

Why are some clergy really cranky about Christmas lights and carols during Advent?

Advent is a time of preparation. At Christmas we celebrate the first coming of Christ. Advent is a time when we use our anticipation of that event to help focus our hearts on his Second Coming. It is a period when those who know what is to come prepare to receive him. Advent purists bemoan the overwhelming influence that Christmas trappings and mall music have on this time of preparation; it is hard to prepare your heart for someone’s coming when everyone keeps celebrating their arrival. As to why “clergy are cranky”--Advent also means annual statistical returns are coming up.

Eschatology: from the Greek eschatos meaning "last", and -logy (from logia, "speaking") which has come to mean "the study of".  Eschatology is the facet of theology which deals with the "last things" of history.  Eschatological subjects include the Resurrection, the Millennium, the Binding of Satan, the Three Witnesses, the Final Judgment, Armageddon, and the New Heavens and the New Earth.  In the New testament, eschatological chapters include Matt. 24, Mark 13, Luke 17, and 2 Thess. 2. In one form or another, most of the books of the Bible deal with end-times subjects.  But some that are more prominently eschatological are: Daniel, Ezekiel, Isaiah, Joel, Zechariah, Matthew, Mark, Luke, 2 Thessalonians and , of course, Revelation.

Almighty God, who hast given us thy only-begotten Son to take our nature upon him, and as at this time to be born of a pure Virgin: Grant that we being regenerate, and made thy children by adoption and grace, may daily be renewed by thy Holy Spirit; through the same our Lord Jesus Christ, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the same Spirit, ever one God, world without end.  Amen.
