Sadness and despair have no place on this birthday of life. Our Saviour is born today, and the fear of death has been overshadowed by the promise of eternal happiness in the presence of Our Father.

By CHRIS & WINSOME DAVIS The older people in our church are the first converts in the region to Christianity and it is faith in the Lord which is keeping many people sober and moving ahead with their lives.
Denouncing is easy. Facing conflicts fairly is difficult. Power politics and mass manipulation might be what dominates Anglican life for the next few years--but we hope not. The lack of equanimity in the Primate’s letter is so blatant that perhaps he - and the Metropolitans who signed - will come to see it.

Reviewed by JOHN McCORMICK This book is important. The Spiritual Brain investigates whether religious, spiritual and/or mystical experiences (RSMEs) are real and valid phenomena from a scientific point of view. It is an excellent review of the philosophical questions faced by people who take their science and religion seriously.

By GAVIN DUNBARWhy was it necessary for God to become man? St. Athanasius argued in a little book called On the Incarnation that God had to become man for two reasons. First, our sin had brought corruption into humanity. So even if we repented of our sin, humanity would still be corrupt. Athanasius said that the only way that corruption could be dealt with was by God becoming Man. He wrote: “For the solidarity of mankind is such that, by virtue of the Word’s indwelling in a single human body, the corruption which goes with death has lost its power over all.” Second, Athanasius argued that humanity’s descent into sin caused us to lose any inherent knowledge of God that we were created with. Athanasius wrote: “What then was God to do… but renew His image in mankind, so that through it men might once more come to know Him?” .
